When a user boots a fresh copy of Windows 8 for the first time, the desktop is empty apart from the Recycle bin icon. Here comes the step by step for getting back My Computer icon on desktop. Click on Desktop listed inside Metro interface.
This will take you to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 icon. Right click on open area, click Personalize. Since there seems to be a lot of problem in Windows 8.1, it is better to reset windows original manufacturer settings.
From windows 8, this feature is enabled where you can take the operating system to original manufacturer settings without losing data. This should fix most of the problems.
If the problem is still there, do a complete reset to original settings which however wipe out data. So better do it, after taking backup on a thumb drive or external hard disk.Regarding Ubuntu, instead of upgrade, why not try to do a fresh installation. Download the latest installation file for Ubuntu which is free. Then install it after wiping out the previous installation.
